Three Tips for Building a Morning Routine You Enjoy

Creating and maintaining a morning routine has a reputation of being only for certain types of people. People who ‘love mornings’ or ‘have time’ or people who ‘are motivated’.

Well, I am here to clarify that there are no pre-qualifications and no rules for how you choose to improve your quality of life.

You don’t have to be a ‘morning person’ to have a routine. You don’t even have to build a morning routine or any routine at all.

Posts, such as this, that simplify how to build positive habits are suggestions that you can choose to use to help you, if you’d like. The hope is that you will use these strategies to add to your quality of life because you have realized that, because of your innate worth, you deserve a high quality life full of peace and positivity.

Positive habits are about you and should be accommodated to you, which means that whether you are waking up at 5AM or waking up at 10AM, the routine is still valid because it’s yours and it improves your life.

For me, having a morning routine makes waking up easier + more fun because it gives me something to look forward to. When I built a consistent, solid routine, I took guessing and planning game out of those few minutes of my day and it gave me more time to focus on me and the present moment.

It also helped build my confidence because I reinforced trust with myself; I actually did what I said I was going to do.

Here is my three step formula for building a routine that you will love.

Tip #1: Pick something peaceful

Actively seeking peace in my daily life has been one of my favorite mindset changes thus far. We put so much pressure on ourselves to always have joy and feel happiness but peace, I believe, is the gateway that allows all other positive feelings to enter your life.

The best way to start your day is calm and grounded; ready to take on whatever is coming your way. Some ways I find peace:

  • 25-30 minute of walking outside
  • 10-15 minutes of reading

TIP #2: Add in something productive

Take this tip with a grain of salt. You DO NOT need to produce or accomplish anything in the morning if you don’t want to. What I mean by productive here is to pick something that will help you in any way. This can mean something as small as turning the coffee maker on the way to the bathroom or counting your morning walk toward your total daily step goal. Anything that moves you forward even 1% is productive and beneficial. Remember this is about you and the quality of life that you deserve.

Other productivity morning hacks:

  • Reading x pages of a book
  • Stopping during your walk to pick up a grocery item
  • Use your walk to stop by the post office
  • Take a food item out to defrost for lunch/dinner

TIP #3: Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

The reason it is so difficult to upkeep habits is because we don’t make them attractive for ourselves. Then, we focus on a task we don’t even enjoy and lose focus on the outcome.

  • Dance along to a playlist
  • Use energizing and fun journal prompts
  • Listen to light hearted or comedic shows, podcasts, or books
  • Make morning clean up a competition or a game with someone else

You don’t have to build an hour long, multi-step, state of the art process. The point of this is to make your life easier to improve your daily quality of life, not to stress you out further or give you even more decision fatigue.

Consider the thing that you will be adding to your life instead of fixating on the things you think you’re sacrificing.
